Mexican-Dutch Family Home in the Garraf

Interior Design & Full Refurbishment

From impersonal to deeply personal family home

he peaceful hills of Garraf, this 320 sqm home became the setting for a very personal transformation. Designed for a Mexican-Dutch couple looking to put down roots and create a true family home, the project was shaped around warmth, belonging and the pleasure of entertaining.

Although the house, built in 2008, was generous in scale and full of natural light, its interiors felt impersonal and disconnected from the lives it was meant to hold. The kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms all needed rethinking, while the couple also wanted to introduce a Finnish sauna as part of a more thoughtful approach to wellbeing. Working closely with the clients, we reimagined the house as a modern-classic retreat with subtle references to Mexico through art and to Holland through carefully selected Dutch furniture and objects.

DESIGN MOMENTS

A welcoming first impression

The front porch was designed to feel warm and inviting from the very first moment. Soft checkerboard flooring gives the entrance a sense of classic character, while the outdoor bar — complete with fridge and sink — makes the space feel ready for easy evenings, spontaneous gatherings and long summer conversations.

A kitchen designed for daily life

At the heart of the home, the kitchen was planned around the way the family actually lives. A peninsula and breakfast nook overlooking the garden and pool create a sociable, relaxed setting for mornings that often stretch into lunch, while the warm, timeless palette keeps the room feeling calm and lived in.

A living room made for gathering

The living room became one of the most cherished spaces in the house, with a statement wall, elegant mouldings and a generously scaled linen sofa creating a room that feels elevated without being formal. It is a space designed for family time, conversation and guests, while still feeling beautifully composed.

Dining with personality

The dining area brings together pieces with a stronger point of view: an organically shaped table sourced from Holland, terracotta lamps handmade in Barcelona and a carefully chosen artwork that anchors the room. It is a social space with character, designed to feel memorable and easy to gather around.

A principal suite with quiet glamour

The main bedroom was reimagined as a restful retreat, with refined ceiling detailing and layered lighting adding softness and depth. In the bathroom, a blush pink Portuguese marble double vanity and herringbone accent wall bring a sense of everyday luxury to the clients’ rituals.

A library for living well

The library was designed as a more intimate and expressive corner of the home, with wall-to-wall shelving, low cabinetry and arched details giving it both elegance and payfulness. It is a space for storing travel books, displaying treasured objects and enjoying the kind of quiet moments that make a house feel personal.

Wellbeing and family spaces with identity

The Finnish sauna, crafted in Northern spruce, was integrated seamlessly into the outdoor bathroom area as a calm retreat for restoration and wellbeing. Elsewhere, the children’s room and bathrooms were given their own character through playful wallpaper, warm colours and thoughtful detailing, so that every member of the family has a space that feels considered and distinctly their own.

PROJECTS

An attic designed for real holiday life

The attic became a generous games room with theatrical atmosphere for football nights and family downtime, alongside a quieter workspace by the window. It reflects the kind of flexible, multi-use living many international families are looking for in a second home.

From the very first proposal to the way she communicated and kept everything organized, Jimena was professional, clear, and easy to work with. She managed the whole project smoothly, handling all the vendors, keeping things on track, and solving problems as they came up.

We’re super happy with the amazing job Jimena did restyling our entire home. She turned it into a beautiful, cohesive space that really feels like us, and every guest we’ve had so far has been blown away. — Fabiola & Jeroen, Garraf.
